Amazon Increases Free Shipping Threshold

This is just a quick note to let you know that Amazon has decided to increase the threshold for their so-called “FREE Super Saver Shipping” from $25/order to $35/order. That’s a big bummer for those willing to wait for their stuff.

In short, this makes Amazon Prime look even better. For $79/year, you get free two-day shipping, overnight shipping for $3.99/item, and access to both their Netflix-like streaming service (Instant Video) and their Kindle Lending Library.

We’ve had a Prime membership since it was first introduced in 2005 and we love it. Back then, they only offered the shipping benefits, but it was still well worth it. The added features are just icing on the cake.

If you’d like to try it out, you can get a free 30 day trial before committing.

It’s been $25 for as long as I remember, and since prices have gone up, the increase to the $35 threshold probably brings it back to ‘original’ levels. I have been thinking for a while that they might raise it, but I was hoping they’d go for $30 instead of $35. Hopefully that just means they make it another 10 years or so before another threshold increase.

That’s actually not too far from the truth. I believe that they first started offering Super Saver Shipping at the beginning of 2002. If you plug the number into the BLS inflation calculator, you’ll see that $25 back then would be worth $32.50 right now.

I’m just hoping that this doesn’t foretell an increase in the cost of Amazon Prime from the current $79 level… 🙂

Between raising the ship min and recently adding my state tax, it’s no longer as advantageous to consume from Amazon. I know my buying has already slowed down from them.

Ahhhhhhhhh, this is sad news. I love the $25 free super saver shipping. Often I would only have one or two low priced items I wanted, and another small item that would be the same cost as shipping anyways would bump me up to the $25 threshold and I’d just buy that and take the free shipping. Oh well, I guess the $25 was getting too pricey for them in this day and age.
