Do you have a Chase Freedom credit card? If so, it’s time re-enroll for their bonus reward categories.

As a reminder, Chase (and others) adopted rotating reward categories a few years ago offering 5% cash back on select purchases, but you have to re-enroll quarterly.

Here are the categories for all of 2013:

  • January to March: Gas stations, drugstores, and Starbucks
  • April to June: Restaurants and movie theaters
  • July to September: Gas stations, theme parks, and Kohl’s
  • October to December: Amazon.com and select department stores

I’m pleased to see gas stations featured during two different quarters since that’s a regular, ongoing expense for just about everybody. And that 5% discount at Amazon during the Christmas shopping season is a nice bonus.

Note that Discover Card is likewise offering 5% rewards at Amazon and department stores during the 4th quarter.

The bonus earnings apply to up to $1,500 in qualifying purchases per quarter, and they’re retroactive. Thus, as long as you activate activate by December 14th, you should get the 4th quarter bonus rewards dating back to October 1st.

All other purchases that you make (i.e., non-bonus categories or bonus categories beyond $1,500/quarter) are subject to the standard 1% cash back rewards.

I am going for a road trip to Yellowstone on Independence Day week. Will use my Chase a lot for gas.
