As a reminder, Discover (and others) adopted rotating reward categories a few years ago. This means that you can get 5% cash back on select purchases, but only if you manually enroll for the latest offer each quarter.
Here are the broad categories (see below for details):
- January to March: Restaurants and movies
- April to June: Home improvement stores
- July to September: “Summer Fun”
- October to December: “Holiday Shopping”
Winter 2013: The winter 2013 categories, which ran from Jan 1 – Mar 31, included restaurants as well as movie theaters, video rental stores, online movie ticket vendors, and online movie rental services.
Spring 2013: The spring 2013 categories, which ran from Apr 1 – Jun 30, included home supply retail stores, lumber/building material stores, paint/wallpaper stores, hardware stores, and lawn and garden supply centers.
Summer 2013: The summer 2013 categories, which ran from Jul 1 – Sep 30, included up to $1,500 in purchases made at gas stations.
For Fall 2013, the situation couldn’t get any simpler. The “Holiday Shopping” category refers to up to $1,500 in online purchases. That’s pretty sweet.
All non-bonus purchases are subject to the standard rewards schedule of 1% cash back. As always, there’s no annual earnings limit and no annual fee.
Enrollment for the fall quarter is currently open. To sign up, login to your online account or call the number on the back of your card. Also, as far as I know, reward activation is not retroactive, so do this as soon as possible.
