Exercising + Learning = Reading + Calf Raises

Posted by Sean | Posted under Fitness | July 19, 2008

Okay, it is the weekend and we can get off-topic, right? I mentioned here that I’m interested in finding good ways to combine learning + exercise. I actually consider it highly relevant to Financial Ramblings, because satisfying my financial curiosity will require long hours.

At the same time, I would like to try and accomplish crazy fitness goals before I get too old. Like, I would love to throw down a two-handed tomahawk dunk like Sir Charles Barkley.

Anyway… here are the details of my first experiment: Reading + Calf Raises

Introduction: This combination seemed like it would be easy enough. I grabbed my copy of Against the Gods: The Remarkable Story of Risk and started doing standing calf raises, nothing fancy. After I felt the burn, I mixed in some toe raises (think "reverse calf raises") and also tried some "holds" at the top of each exercise. Eventually, I mixed in some one-legged calf raises so one leg could rest while the other works.

Learning: The reading part was productive, no problems whatsoever.

Exercise: I definitely overworked my calves (!) which is not easy, at all…

Conclusion: next time, I’ll concoct a modified routine with more intensity and less duration. Maybe the added intensity will come from a weightvest and/or more single-leg calf raises. Unfortunately, that also means less reading… might merge this with related exercises.
