Are you planning on making charitable contributions before the end of the year? If so, time is running short.
In fact, as of this writing, you have just four short days to make tax deductible contributions for 2013. Better hurry!
I’m not sure about you, but I tend to leave charitable contributions to the last minute. Thus, I’m usually rushing to make them during the week between Christmas and New Year’s Day.
This year will actually be a bit different in that we’ve decided to start bunching our tax deductions (to the extent possible) into alternating years. Thus, we’ll be waiting until the start of 2014 to make our 2013 contributions.
Regardless of the timing, I though it would be interesting to talk a bit about our preferred charities — and to find out about your favorites, too.
We’ve always tried to strike a balance between supporting local charities and donating to larger efforts. In recent years, we’ve thus supported our local food bank and homeless shelter, the Red Cross, Modest Needs, and the Conservation Fund.
What about you? Please share your favorite charities in the comments.
By the way, if you’ve stumbled onto a new charity and are trying to decide if it’s worthy of your support, you might want to check them out on Charity Navigator, Charity Watch, or the BBB’s charity ratings.
Oh, and a quick reminder… If you’re looking to maximize the tax benefits of your charitable giving, consider donating appreciated assets instead of cash.
