Free Language Learning Site (LiveMocha)

Posted by Sean | Posted under Frugality | July 6, 2008

Three cheers to The Femmes Frugal for posting a link to LiveMocha, a frugal resource for learning languages. And by frugal, I mean it appears to be FREE. Of course, like all free sites, there is the question of the business model. But I really like the potential of this site. LiveMocha could make CD-ROMs like Rosetta Stone go the way of Encyclopedia Britannica.

Besides the cool platform, I’m struck by the volume of native Chinese-speaking members. Currently, LiveMocha has 150,875 English-speakers, but only 32,390 in the United States. Meanwhile, there are 93,376 Chinese-speakers, and fully 62,532 of them are in China. (Hello, economic trends.) Although, at least for now, English is the "melting pot" language.

Speaking… Total Users Mostly Learning… # of Users
Chinese 93,376 English 84,418
English 150,875 Spanish 26,264
French 13,705 English 9,287
German 5,646 English 2,605
Hindi 15,643 English 13,929
Italian 7,352 English 4,959
Japanese 2,156 English 1,472
Portuguese 67,706 English 48,119
Russian 10,407 English 8,080
Spanish 86,738 English 71,148

Also check out http://www.edufire.com. This is also a free language learning website; the only thing that does have a fee is the one-on-one language video tutoring sessions but they are affordable starting at $10/hr. I haven’t found another language resource that offers anything at a lower price. I’m learning spanish and italian on the site now and I’m learning something everyday. Great site just thought I would drop you the suggestion. BTW- Livemocha.com is also a great resource.

    Hi Sam (Steph?),
Maybe the reason you haven’t found another language resource at lower price is because you work for edufire. I think it’s ok to promote your site on someone else’s blog. But you should at least be open about it.

I did find another one, apart from the ones in the comments: http://www.studentteacherexchange.com/ which is completely free and uses chat/video/voice and whiteboards as well. They are new but my guess is they will be booming soon since they charge nothing.
