Gas Company Budget Billing Up 50% (It Is ON!)

Posted by Sean | Posted under Expenses | September 12, 2008

Grrr…

The latest bill went from $95 to $142, an increase of 50%. Before this adjustment, we thought we were doing good. Budget billing for the prior six-month period was $121. Prior to that we had peak bills in the $200s, before budget billing. That spurred us to upgrade the water heater, wrap the pipes, and manually optimize the temperature, sometimes.

It is not big money in the big scheme of things, but I think is a control issue with monthly expenses. Who is in control, them or us? Currently, them. Eventually, us.

Admittedly, I’m bad for not knowing more about the utility bills. All I can see is the cost-per-unit has not increased and the units-per-month does not look unusual. How did they came up with that adjustment… (quick Googling)… okay, they charge significantly more per unit in the winter. Who knew? (Probably everyone.)

Maybe we are not doing to bad, but I’m going to assume that we can do better.

MSN has what looks like a good starter article: The Basics: 12 ways to fight soaring heating bills. Unlike Consumer Reports, they group their ideas by Free, Low Cost and High Cost.

I’ll be researching and implementing as we prepare for winter. The Rambling Household is going to turn back the clock on energy expenses.

I am sick of paying so much for my bills as well. With the price of all energy products increasing significantly it is becoming frustrating dealing with prices. I would love to see how you are going to turn back the clock on energy bills.

I think I’m going to whip up a checklist and attack this systematically. Stay tuned…
