Money Roundup: Denied Credit Card Edition

As I mentioned last week when I wrote about discount Disney tickets, we’ve been on vacation in the Orlando area. While this isn’t a particularly frugal vacation, we’ve been having an awful lot of fun — and even learning a bit along the way.

While at Disney’s Hollywood Studios the other day, for example, we had an interesting experience. We were waiting in line at one of the shops where our two youngest kids were buying small stuffed animals with their allowance money.

As we neared the cash register, the woman ahead of us had her credit card declined. Her reaction? She laughed it off with a comment about having “used that one up.” And then she reached for a different card. Needless to say, this made for a rather educational conversation as we strolled back across the park.

We talked about how credit cards work, we speculated about why some people spend more money than they have, and I explained that we never would’ve gone on a trip like this if we didn’t have more than enough money in the bank to pay for it.
