Money Roundup: Internet Sales Tax Edition

In case you missed it… The Senate voted in favor of an internet sales tax on Friday. More accurately, they voted for a non-binding measure that would give states more power to collect sales taxes on purchases made from out-of-state online retailers.

This was really just a trial balloon to see if there was support the proposal. And there clearly is, at least in the Senate. However, the issue of forcing out-of-state companies to collect state sales taxes isn’t entirely up to Congress.

Indeed, back in 1992 the Supreme Court ruled that companies can’t be forced to collect such taxes if they don’t have a physical nexus in the state in question. It’ll be interesting to see how this all plays out in the coming year(s).
