Podcast Review: Mad Money Machine

Posted by Sean | Posted under Audio, Investing, Podcasts, Reviews | May 17, 2008

@ MadMoneyMachine @ iTunes
"Paul Douglas Boyer takes on Wall Street with complete laziness and reviews the Mad Money recommendations of Jim Cramer.

title: Mad Money Machine
format: podcast
length:~30 minutes
frequency: weekly, Friday
preconceptions: none (who?)

I found Mad Money Machine in the Top 25 investing podcasts @ iTunes. The episodes went back to #91, so I downloaded everything available — all ten podcasts — for wall-to-wall listening.

The first thing you notice: the show is extremely well-produced and the host has an enjoyable personality. The next thing you notice: the show has little relation to Cramer. Maybe in the beginning, but if so it has evolved. The main theme here is passive investing and its results compared to active investing, whether by Cramer or other gurus. This is done with “edutainment” bits like Guru Roulette and Portfolio Smackdown.

I have some passive leanings, so I found the content agreeable. However, halfway into the podcast marathon, I worried about the content-to-fluff ratio. At times this is more of a variety show than an investment show. Then again, not needing to focus on investing 24/7 is one of the key benefits of the passive approach. Plus, I had excitedly crammed ten episodes into a few days — too much, too soon.

Bottom-Line: I like the show too much give it up, and at 30 minutes per week, I’ll justify it as part financial, part entertainment.
