Since Everyone Is Complaining About The Grocery Shrink Ray

Posted by Sean | Posted under Contrarian | September 14, 2008

I feel compelling to provide a counter-example: Wellness Super5Mix Lamb, 15lb

No, they did not increase the size or decrease the price, but I still saved money.

Cheaper - PetCo started carrying this brand. Previously we went to a specialty store. We might be saving a dollar or two per bag. But this is not the real savings.

Fresher - Wellness recently upgraded their packaging. Now they have a snap-seal to lock in freshness. Our dog would argue that this is part of the savings.

Closer - old store = 13 miles away, new store = 4 miles away. This is a real savings! Sometimes, the old store is on our way, but when it is not, it is a pain.

I guess my contention is that this is not a zero-sum game. While there is a natural friction between quantity and pricing, everyone can win with smarter packaging and more efficient distribution.
