As you may (or may not) be aware, this coming Saturday — the day after Black Friday — is “Small Business Saturday.”
This promo was launched by American Express back in 2010 as a way to reward cardholders for shopping at small businesses — and to encourage those businesses to accept AmEx cards.
Update: Click here for details for the 2013 promo.
To participate, simply
register your card and then use it to make a $25 minimum purchase at a qualifying small business on Saturday, November 25th. Shortly thereafter, you’ll receive a $25 statement credit.
To figure out if a particular business qualifies, you can go to ShopSmall.com and click the “Find Out Where to Shop” link to pull up a searchable map.
Unfortunately, the map interface is a bit clunky. Thus, it’s worth noting that they’ve always honored this deal at any small business (not including things like franchisees of national chains). Spot checking the map, that still appears to be true.
Thus, you’re probably safe if you go to just about any locally owned, non-franchise business that accepts American Express.
Also… Unlike most other card issuers, AmEx assigns a different number to multiple cards on the same account. On top of that, the Terms & Conditions states that there is a limit of one credit per American Express Card (emphasis added).
In the past, each unique card number (even if they’re attached to the same account) has qualified for this offer. Thus, my wife and I can do this four times since we both have AmEx Delta SkyMiles and the AmEx Blue Cash cards (two accounts, four cards).
No promises, but I’ve registered all four and we’re planning on taking full advantage of this deal. Assuming all goes as planned, we’ll pocket a free $100.
P.S. They say that registration is limited, so if you’re interested you should probably sign up right away. As of this writing, registration is still open.
