The Contrarian: Buying a Ridiculously Customized Automobile

May 12, 2008 · Filed Under Cars, Contrarian, Craigslist

In the prior post (Should “Invest” and “Auto” Be Used in the Same Sentence?) we saw how to turn $100K cash into a $30K vehicle. Since this blog deals with finances and not autos, you would expect me to get all Millionaire Next Door with the saving & investing.

i.e. do not overbuild a car to its make/model, just like a house to the neighborhood.

However, if you absolutely must have THE NICEST CAMRY IN THE WORLD, I suppose it could make sense to mimize the damange and search nationwide for a car that is already heavily customized. Why pay retail for all the components? Let the original owner take the hit on depreciation, illiquidity and sweat equity.

This post is from the contrarian category,
where I explore other sides of an issue,
even if I do not agree with them.
