USAA No Longer Open to Non-Military Individuals

by Michael on Aug 28, 2013

This is just a quick note to let you know that the ever-popular USAA has decided to reverse course and is no longer offering their financial services to non-military individuals.

For background, USAA was founded in 1922 as a military-only insurance outfit and eventually grew into a full service financial company, offering banking and investment services, credit cards, mortgages, etc.

About four years ago, they opened up their banking and investment services to people without a military affiliation, and their services have received rave reviews from just about everyone that I’ve talked to.

But… A recent tweet from @BudgetsAreSexy alerted me to the fact that they’ve gone back to their military-only restriction. Those who already have accounts are fine, but they’ve closed the door to non-military folks going forward.

Bummer. If you got in, great. If not, you’ll have to look elsewhere.
